Nadia behree ghayee re

An attempt to compare both the versions of this song - Nadia by Jeff Beck performed at Monte Jazz Festival in 2001 and the original one as beautifully sung by Swati Natekar in the album "Beyond Skin" realeased September 13, 1999. Awesome awesome awesome tracks, both of them!

The main point of this video, however, is to present the original song.

Exam-time Cookery

Compared to the kinds of daal available here in Singapore, which appear like yellow-coloured water to me, this is the kind of daal we Pakistanis make. And these are two different daals - the yellow one is daal channa - chickpeas split in half, and the black one we call masar - but I think people from different parts of Pakistan and India have different names for it - like daal masoor or something. Both these take four hours to prepare, though no real effort is required.

So what I'm trying to share here is that I spent four precious hours cooking during exam time when I could've studied. What a cool I am! What a cool.

Exam time is like that for me - even the most boring and mundane activities seem to be so refreshing, and studying is the last thing that could interest me. The irony! Oh well, maybe I should begin studying for the two major exams I have tomorrow! Hah! [The keyword here is 'maybe'.]

Banish rumormongers

People who believe in hear-say and then pass it on will surely go to hell. Unfortunately this is a trait I have noticed most among Pakistanis. There could be no place for gossip-mongers in heaven.

The Annihilation

Once again the evil examination orchestration is here to disrupt peace and tranquility only to ruin the lives of effective students campus-wide. Here in the study room where I'm seated three people have buried their face in their books or laptops while making desperate attempts to study and fallen asleep. Others are flipping pages earnestly and consuming as much content as their little minds can swallow. And as you may see, it's 3 am.

Below you can see my final-exam datesheet [and the torture it intimates!]. Finally I can say that I have begun studying! So pray for me, or wish me well, or both! And to all those taking your exams, good luck!

You Are 74% Open

You're a pretty open person - and you don't mind sharing the good, bad, and sometimes ugly.

And while sometimes you do catch yourself blabbing on, you usually exhibit restraint.

You're openness is quite refreshing, and it encourages other people to be open with you!

Your Passion is Purple

Sophisticated and classy, you're a bit picky about sex.

You're more likely to be turned on by a fancy hotel room than a dirty flick.

Sex is fine enough, as long as it doesn't mess up your hair.

For you, sex is more about power and favors than actually pleasure.

Your Theme Song is Fight for Your Right by the Beastie Boys

"Your mom busted in and said, "What's that noise?"

The right side of your brain is all about creativity and flexibility.

Daring and intuitive, right brained people see the world in their unique way.

If you're right brained, you likely have a talent for creative writing and art.

Your right brain prefers day dreaming, philosophy, and sports.

Your Famous Last Words Will Be:

"So, you're a cannibal."

You Are 60% Boyish and 40% Girlish

You are pretty evenly split down the middle - a total eunuch.

Okay, kidding about the eunuch part. But you do get along with both sexes.

You reject traditional gender roles. However, you don't actively fight them.

You're just you. You don't try to be what people expect you to be.

BG and AG

I can imagine a human race, maybe 50 years from now, when they would no longer use the Christian calendar. No BC [before Christ], no AD [Anno Domini]. So how will they measure years then? The year would begin in what is now September, and the notation for the years would be BG and AG. Before Google, and After Google.

See, I can not understand how university students in the past were able to browse through archives, study from thick journals, conduct research, and find the information they needed. For me, if I was living in the BG era, I probably would not have made it past basic schooling. But now every computer application comes with a Ctrl+F function, allowing you to find the exact phrase or term or word you are looking for, in say, 10 million pages? 100 million pages? I mean, there just isn't any limit.

Information is moving from hard-drives to virtual drives and it's happening right now. So far, Google is the king in the virtual environment. Google has the first-mover advantage in quality search services and it can be expected that it will make every effort to keep its throne.

You're probably thinking why September, right? I mean, I just didn't say September because my birthday falls in that month; that it's the magic-NINE month. It's simple really - Google was founded in September, on the 7th, in 1998. We're living in 8 AG right now. In 50 years, what is now 7th September will be new year's eve in the year 58 AG and hence a public holiday!

As long as I'm making predictions, I also predict that most of the world by then would be populated with free-thinkers, who will live virtual lives with no limitations of the gender or race they choose for themselves. The whole world would have the same law and the world will be ruled by the media.

When the music's over

After a great year, full of success stories for @NUS, one would expect the last LC gathering to be one with tears flowing (not only from Imran's eyes!) and a lot of sharing. Well, no one cried and the tissues I carried with me went to waste. But it was a deeply emotional LC gathering nevertheless.

Touch On Fastest Indian

It really must mean you have become extremely tech-savvy when you try to make the credits roll faster at the end of the movie by trying your mouse's scroll button. I mean, why not? Sure, that would be cool. But then, the music would also "scroll" faster and no one wants that.

Anyway, the World's Fastest Indian is one great movie if you're looking for motivation. It's about following your dream, feeding your passion and all that. It is the true story of a man who wanted to set the top land-speed record on his motorbike that only went up to 52 mph when he first purchased it forty odd years before. But the movie itself isn't about the record. It is the story of a man who was larger than life and did not take no for an answer.

Played by Anthony Hopkins whose sheer brilliance has been captured by Donaldson's best film to date, Burt Munro is a crusty and crafty man from New Zealand with just about the right amount of New Zealand accent. He makes a long journey to Utah to participate in the annual Speed Week and fights one battle after the other in a foreign land. While ordering breakfast to the annoyed waitress, he was asked how he would like his eggs to which Burt replied, "I'd like them cooked". The nature of his simplistic nature was such that he was intrigued to see a menu with photographs!

What needs to be pointed out here is that this film is based on fact. Burt Munro was, in fact, a folk hero in New Zealand where the movie's writer and director, Roger Donaldson, grew up. So you could say it is a true story of a local hero in New Zealand. Or it could be a story about certain New Zealand characteristics, like their modesty in drawing any attention to themselves. See, Burt would rather talk about the "Indian" - his motorcycle, than himself. The movie could also be about setting foot in a foreign land, ignoring the coldness one might feel, and staying optimistic.

The movie assures us that Burt's record of riding his bike up to 201.85 mph under the category of "streamlined motorcycles under 1000 cc" stands till today. Burt worked twenty-five years on his rusty 1920 Indian motorbike to make this record without ever knowing if he would ever even leave Invercargill - his hometown, let alone going all the way to Bonneville in Utah. That too to compete against millionaire drivers who were sponsored by huge corporations! And to add to that, throughout this ordeal he was constantly suffering from angina pains.

It is the display of intrepidity of this level that gives me the psychic energy I need in this hour of need. And what can this hour of need be, you ask? Why, it's the exam period again; right around the corner! And what's that lying in the corner of my room? A stack of books? Why does it seem like I never saw them before?

My oh my.

Burt, how did you motivate yourself all along? How!

Imagine

I am growing number and number by day. And I mean numb. It's like reaching my happy place, which is in oblivion somewhere, where nothing ever goes on, and nothing ever will. Following my sine wave theory of life, this is the "depression" part of the current curve in my life. Studies or no studies, internship or no internship, money or no money, job or no job, life or no life; it doesn't matter to me. It so happens that after trying so hard for such a long time and being reasonably successful - the "elation" part, the curve just goes down.

And I'm not joking about the part about numbness. My left's foot main toe, captain of the ship, has already become numb. I could kick a wall and start to bleed but won't feel a thing! So I guess, little by little, bit by bit, I am gonna become totally numb, and become oblivious to everything around me.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no country
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in ease

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the onlyone
I hope some day you will join us
And the world will be one

Imagine no posession
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you will join us
And the world will live as one
